The Known Universe Movie Map

Originally published July 2012. Restored with updated scientific context.

The American Museum of Natural History created a fascinating video of its four-dimensional map of the universe, the Digital Universe Atlas.

Watching the map zoom outward through space and then return toward Earth gives an extraordinary sense of the scale of the universe. I actually gained a greater appreciation of that scale as the map zoomed back in from the farthest reaches of the observable universe.

Just sit back, watch, and ponder how much of the universe remains unknown to us.

Food for Thought: The Black Hole at the Center of Our Galaxy

Around the center of our galaxy lies a supermassive black hole known as Sagittarius A*. Stars orbit this enormous object under the influence of its gravity.

The original article wondered about the possibility of stars merging or falling into the black hole and imagined dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of enormous stars circling the galactic center.

Although stars do orbit close to Sagittarius A*, they are not all being pulled directly into it. Their movements provide astronomers with valuable information about the mass and gravitational influence of the black hole.

It is remarkable to consider the immense scale of these objects and how much remains to be discovered about our own galaxy. Wow.

Looking Back at the Digital Universe Atlas

The Digital Universe Atlas continues to be developed by the American Museum of Natural History and Hayden Planetarium. It brings together astronomical observations and scientific datasets to help visualize the universe in three dimensions and across time.

The project is now distributed through OpenSpace and the Digital Universe Atlas, allowing researchers, educators, and space enthusiasts to explore cosmic geography interactively.

The museum also released an updated 360-degree version of The Known Universe in 2023.

Historical note: This Geographic Travels article was originally published in July 2012. It has been restored while preserving the original video, Digital Universe Atlas reference, personal observations, and discussion of the Milky Way’s central black hole. Additional scientific context and updated resources have been included.
